![]() Yes, the spedo would read slightly low but otherwise no problems. Rear: their are pleanty of sizes to run, i went with the 215/45/17 as i had them. i tried 215/45/17 (upfront) and they rubbed badly- no fixing it (both on 40 offset). Had 'em stacked up like turtle shells in there.Click to expand.I have a few posts on this topic you can search for, but basically:įront: 205/40/17 seems perfect (with a little dremmel action it is flawless). There was a point where I had so many hard tops I had to go to Sears and get a little portable metal building just to house them. ![]() A widebody kit with a custom top man my head starts swimming with ideas. And presuming therewoud be some performance mods to go along with it you could build a real street eater. All in all though even if you do add say 100lbs net after you've removed the soft top and origional unneccisary parts and pannels and put your new top on, the car is still light as hell. ![]() To go back to Killa-B's point though don't just bondo up a hardtop, etc, you need to really consider weight here, and decide what your goals are with this car. This sounds more like a pipedream of the OP but if he decides to do it I'd love to see it go down. I mean we could argue hey if you don't want a vert don't get one, grab a used porshe and build from there why de-convertable a convertable, but it sounds like you could really make a unique and possibly very good looking product here. ![]() In my mind we're using fiberglass or something of the sort to put this together and hoping to achieve the same thing the spoon s2k did, from what I hear its amazingly faster. To me your own custom built hardtop wouldn't even be that much heavier than say a toyota hardtop with a rollbar. Oh yeah for sure, don't do this on a looks mod only basis, like I said for example with the spoon s2k, they didn't just build the top out of bondo its its own unit. Oh yeah and forget resale value, we could say the same thing about anyone getting a turbo kit, yeah every time you change your car you're making the group of people willing to buy it smaller and smaller, but this is life. All the funny jokes aside its a very plausable mod for the right person with the skills/money and willingness to experement. The biggest thing here is don't just grab a hartop and weld it on, its pointless, if you want the stiffness, put in a roll bar and then throw the hardtop on, end of discussion, but if you really want to go all out and create something, I'd say go for it. The spoon s2000 comes to mind for real inspiration Then strip the body panels off the car, and weld a frame to the frame, bars that wrap from the rear up to the a pilar and start putting it together sort of as a roll cage at first, a good skeleton that will actually give you additional chasis stiffness. My suggestion? play with the shapes a bit, get somone who can draw cars to start doing so for you, get 4-5 examples running and then decide what you want to do. Realistically though you're asking a question that is pretty simple, its like saying can i bondo wings on my car? sure just do it. Try to read SE's hilarious post at work without laughingor showing any sign of amusement, ebcause then the boss will know you aren't doing work. So do you have any in 040 laying around? I'll give you 500 for one if you do. Maybe JB Weld? Oh man, it's gonna start again. So go ahead and grab a dozen or so and start experimenting. Nowadays, you can still find hard tops all over the place. Toss in a bag of briquettes and barbecue out of 'em. In the winter, we'd turn 'em upside down and use 'em for sleds. So yeah, you could pretty much do whatever you wanted. Had 'em stacked up like turtle shells in there. They had so many in inventory that they were running contests, like "Guess which day Saturday will be this week" and you'd get a couple shipped right to your door, any color you wanted. oops.īut then, this all happened back in the day when Carson Toyota was giving us hardtops for free. ![]() The people who thought you could Weld Metal to Fiberglass were starting to get out in front, until somebody actually tried it and. We had the Bondo faction, and they got into a fight with the Exterior Latex Calkers. ![]()
